Overview

In this course you will learn the best practices to keep children safe from online child sexual abuse and exploitation.  

We hope that you will take the opportunity to learn from this course and apply the information you receive in your daily practices, as well as help disseminate the knowledge to others in order to ensure that children are safe from risks of online sexual abuse and exploitation.   

Through this course you will be challenged to take notice of your online environment, become aware of the different areas where children can be exposed to online sexual abuse and exploitation, and recognise how to apply safety measures to protect children from harm when online.

Who is the course for?

This course is built especially for practitioners working with children; such as teachers, social workers, staff from NGOs which assist children, or any other professional who has direct or in-direct contact with children through their work. However, anyone who wants to gain knowledge on how to keep children safe from child sexual abuse and exploitation online is welcome to take the course.  

The context of this course is related specifically to the situation in Cambodia, however, most of the sessions are relevant for professionals anywhere who would like to expand their knowledge on online child sexual abuse and exploitation, and learn the best child protection mechanisms related to online safety.

Learning Path

In this lesson:  

  • You will explore the main definitions related to online child sexual exploitation and understand the different terms which are generally used in this regard.  
  • You will be introduced to the main forms of sexual exploitation of children when they are online and understand who the child sex offenders are.  

In this lesson: 

  • You will learn what puts children at such high risk of OCSE, and how they are targeted by child sex offenders online. 
  • You will learn what you can do to address these risks in order to prevent children from becoming victims of OCSE.  

In this lesson: 

  • You will understand how OCSE affects a child’s wellbeing, and what signs are often apparent after cases of abuse. 
  • You will also learn how to respond to OCSE and what to do if a child discloses abuse. 

In this lesson: 

  • You will learn how the internet enables them to do so.  
  • You will learn the different technological terms of the internet which relate to OCSE, understand how information travels through the web and how is utilised by child sex offenders online and explore the situation in Cambodia. 

In this lesson:  

  • You will learn about the currently existing  legal frameworks addressing OCSE, both internationally and in Cambodia. 
  • You will also learn the different challenges and current gaps in legislation.  

In this lesson:  

  • You will learn the most important lesson of them all  how you can prevent OCSE from happening.  
  • You will also learn how you can  work with others to stop this horrible exploitation. 

At the end of the course, you will be required to complete a final test.
